FAQ #1

Local Big Box Store Misguides Customer

A young man got in touch with us last week by cell phone while he was in a mall store saying he was getting “the run around. [He was]

He wanted to buy a car stereo and speakers for his 1998 Toyota Corolla. He was told by the Big Box installer that there would be a $40 non-refundable consolation fee. The installer told he that he would need DIGITAL speakers to got with his new CD deck and that he had to buy an upgraded deck with an iPod cable. At that point the smart young man decided that he didn’t want BB to do the job.

Smart Customer came to our store and spoke to Doug, our car installer, who showed him a Pioneer deck that met his needs (without an iPod cable). Where the Big Box store told him he had to buy the more expensive deck and speakers that he did not want to afford, the Nantucket Sound deck and speakers were within his price range.

We installed the deck and speakers for him the same day.

FAQ#2

Nantucket Sound Owner Gets Lightening Lesson

Jim & Ellie have lots of computers and TVs at home. They are all hooked up to quality electronic surge suppressors – EXCEPT ONE – a Sony 26" Bravia LCD HiDef that is 15 months old in a sewing room/bedroom.

Jim sometimes does service work for our installation customers and at any time has a number of brand new quality electronic surge suppressors sitting in his workshop at home just waiting to be used. So sad!

On Friday an electrical storm blew overhead with lightning strikes within 1 second of the thunder claps (1/5 of a mile). The lights flickered and an instantaneous power outage/ reset occurred. Clocks needed to be reset. Adrenaline soon returned to normal.

All TVs and computers were fine – SAVE ONE!

The repair on that 26" Sony LCD will probably in the $200-$400 range….worth doing because it was a $1,200 set….but it could have been prevented.

Foolish Jim – the one set not protected by an electronic surge suppressor. Now he will be without the set for weeks - and without his $200-$400 forever.

And just because the set gets repaired now, what other inside components of the TV were stressed almost to breaking and may fail in the near to mid future.

MORAL: Don’t be sloppy like Jim. Get a new quality electronic surge suppressor for EVERY quality TV set and stereo and computer. Cheap $12.95 to $19.95 hardware store units don’t do it. Old resused strips don’t do it. Capable surges generally cost $50 and up.

FAQ#3

Off Brand Olivea TV Horror Show

A customer asked us for advice. 18 months ago he bought a 32" Olivea LCD TV from a big box store south of Boston. Now a few months after the warranty ended the set stopped working. He called the store where he purchased from and was told that there was not any New England based service available and that he would have to ship it to California for service. The shipping charge would be $250.00 plus the cost of the repair (probably hundreds of dollars more).

Moral: Buying off brands from big box stores to save half a hundred is a VERY COSTLY way to go.

Nantucket Sound carefully only sells products that we can get local serice for. Unlike the big box stores we help customers get things serviced locally even if they did not buy extended warranties.

And our prices are as low or lower than the big bad big box stores!
