Today we discuss the Bose SoundTouch 120, which is a step above the CineMate 15 that was discussed in our review last week. This unit has a big sound and takes up a small footprint. Like the 15, the SoundTouch 120 has a soundbar; however, instead of having 4 drivers, it has 5. It uses Bose TrueSpace technology to create a psychoacoustic surround effect.
There is also a larger acoustimass bass module with the SoundTouch 120, opposed to the CineMate 15. This module is wireless, which makes it easy to hide in any part of your room. That keeps it out of sight, but still enables rich deep bass to reach every part of the listening area.
Besides utilizing TrueSpace technology, the SoundTouch 120 has ADAPTiQ. This literally does an in depth analysis of your room and its unique acoustics. It calibrates the system in such a way that the sound is precisely directed at various areas in the room. This gives the listener an immersive experience in the sound. The sound surrounds you and causes you to be in the middle of the action. You are not listening to a movie but are a part of it. The ADAPTiQ uses a microphone to take an audio picture of your room. It comes in handy as every area has different acoustics. There are no two rooms that are the same. This is what makes the SoundTouch 120 stand out. It is not only a great soundbar, but the sound is customized for your specific room.
The SoundTouch 120 also has a small control console. This is a great feature as it is almost like having a full receiver with a multitude of inputs. The unit has four HDMI inputs for connection of cable and satellite boxes, games, and bluray players. There is one HDMI output for connection to your TV. The control console has the ability for source selection between inputs. There is also a digital optical, digital coaxial and analog set of inputs as well. The CineMate 120 can accommodate any set of devices you choose to plug into it. The control console can be your switching center, thus allowing you to place the TV on a given hdmi input and leave the rest to the SoundTouch 120. There is even a 3.5mm analog plug on the side of the control console for private listening through headphones. With all of these features, the SoundTouch 120 is very compact. The soundbar is only 17 inches long, while the control console is 12.3 inches wide by 8.2 inches deep by 2.5 inches high. Since the acoustimass bass module has a wireless range of approximately 30 feet, it can be easily hidden out of site. The CineMate 120 has another advantage as well. There is now an adapter included to incorporate Boses SoundTouch system. With this, you can stream music via your Wi-Fi. Music can be streamed from thousands of internet radio stations as well as from your devices or computer. The SoundTouch can be combined with other SoundTouch players thus making for a whole house music system. Play music on your CineMate 120 or have any combination of other rooms in your house through SoundTouch players. The universal remote that comes with the SoundTouch 120 can easily control all of your components. This system can satisfy any of your sound needs. It works for playing your movies as well as playing music. Because of its 5 speakers and powerful acoustimass bass module, it truly has an exceptional sound.
